Dental assistants registering for the first time in Canada—general registration

Go to the HMS app, click/tap on Register now and create the basic account.
- Select dental assistant as your profession.
- Select general registration as your registration type.
- Provide your first and last name and a valid email address; set up your password.
- Pay the application fee—follow the payment instructions on the screen.
- After your payment is received and the registrar approves your basic account, you will get an email notification sent to the email address you provided. Follow the link in that notification to log in for the first time.
Provide all mandatory information and documents
In your HMS profile, fill out all the mandatory information and upload required documents.
Required fields are marked with the * symbol. If information or documents are missing in a section of your profile you will see the symbol on the tab or button linking to that section.
Applicants must provide all required documents to the College in an electronic format. The system accepts .jpg, .png, or .pdf file types, not larger than 8 MB.
Your identity
Fill out required fields in the Basic and Contact sections of your profile.
As proof of your identity, you must upload:
- A recent passport-style photo of yourself (taken within the past twelve months), and
- A government-issued identity document:
- A notarized or certified copy of passport, birth certificate, citizenship card or proof of permanent residency status, or
- A notarized or certified copy of the authorization issued by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada which permits you to engage in the practice of dentistry in Canada
Education and certification
Complete the education and certification information in the Education section of your profile.
To prove you have completed required education, you must upload the following documents:

Professional education and certification:

A certified copy of your graduation certificate from a from a dental assisting program accredited by one of these dental assistantsry accreditation bodies:
- Commission on Dental Accreditation of Canada (CDAC), or
- American Dental Association Commission on Dental Accreditation (CODA)
- A letter from your school verifying your graduation from a dental assisting program
- Your National Dental Assisting Examining Board (NDAEB) certificate

A certified copy of your graduation certificate from a from a dental assisting program accredited by one of these dental assistantsry accreditation bodies:
- Your current CPR/BLS certificate from an in-person hands-on course by a provider recognized by the Council
If you are a new graduate working towards getting the NDAEB certificate, and you meet all other registration requirements, you will be considered a provisional registrant with a conditional licence. You will have one year from your date of licensure to complete the NDAEB exam and submit a copy of your certificate to the PEIDC. Failure to complete this process within one year will result in your name being removed from the dental assistants register and the College will notify your employer.
If you graduated from a non-accredited dental assisting program, you must pass a written exam and then register for and complete the Clinical Practice Evaluation (CPE) administered by NDAEB.
Professional liability insurance
All dental assistants practising in PEI must hold or be covered by a professional liability insurance (PLI) that provides protection of $1 million per claim or occurrence and an aggregate limit of no less than $3 million.
To prove you are covered, you must upload your PLI certificate in the Insurance and history section of your profile.
Personal integrity and clean record
As proof of your personal integrity and clean record, in the Insurance and history section of your profile you must upload:
- A Vulnerable Sector Search and a Criminal Record Check document; the search must be performed and the document dated within the previous twelve months
- Two written character references from non-family members who have known you for the past four years; the reference letters must be signed and dated, indicate how long the person has known you, and have been written within the past 12 months
Sign the legal statements
Under the Legal section of your profile, there will be a series of legal statements to which you must agree to become a member of the College. Read all the statements carefully, check all the checkboxes and sign your full legal name.
Pay the registration fee
Pay the registration fee according to the fee schedule. Find the payment instructions under the Payments heading of your member dashboard.
Licensing
The Registrar will review all your information and documents, and if satisfied that you meet all requirements to practice dental assistance in PEI, activate your account.
The system will send you the account activation notification by email.
Your registration certificate and payment receipts will be under the payment history heading in your member profile.
