If you have a complaint...

The public is encouraged to raise any concerns they may have about the practices of dentists or dental assistants in Prince Edward Island.

Complaints may be submitted by patients, their family members, or any members of the public who feel that ethical standards have been violated or that there has been inappropriate care.

Employers or colleagues of dentists or dental assistants may also report concerns to the College, especially in situations where they are required to do so under specific circumstances.

Additionally, the College’s registrar has the authority to initiate the complaint process independently.

In accordance with the PEI Regulated Health Professions Act, the College is mandated to investigate any complaints regarding a registrant's practice that are brought to their attention.

How to file a complaint

All complaints must be submitted in writing and signed by the complainant. Anonymous complaints cannot be accepted. The written complaint should include the following details:

  • The name and contact details of the complainant
  • The name and contact details of the patient (if different from the complainant)
  • The name of the dental professional involved
  • A thorough description of the issue, including relevant dates
  • Any supporting documents
  • Information about any prior communication with the dental professional regarding the issue

Once a complaint is received, the registrar will assess it and may attempt to resolve the matter informally.

If informal resolution is not possible, the registrar may either dismiss the complaint or refer it to the investigation committee comprised of at least one college member and one public representative. The committee will collect facts, and review the complaint and supporting evidence. If necessary, one or more persons may be engaged as investigators in the process.

The investigation committee will decide on one of the following actions within 60 days:

  • Dismiss the complaint
  • Refer the complaint to a mediator for resolution
  • Forward the complaint to the Hearing Committee
